The Nursery

I remember how we felt when we first found out I was pregnant.  Our first natural emotion was elation.  We were so happy to know we were successful, after trying for what seemed to be a long time.  Then, reality set in and our house seemed so small.  It was even more difficult to visualize a space in our home when we found out we were having twins, not just one baby!

I had just redecorated our home office, and I loved the way my crafts room (which doubled as our guest room) was set up–but it was obvious that we were going to have to give up a room soon.  After much consideration, we decided to eliminate the ‘guest room’ and find temporary new homes for all the furniture in that room.

We moved the futon to the office, for future guest use, and the large drafting table and mini chest of drawers was moved to our bedroom.  The large entertainment center, along with a TV and DVD player, was moved out since we really could not find a place at home to accommodate it.  However, there were a few pieces we could keep still keep once we converted the room into a nursery.  We kept the white shelves, which were perfect for a nursery, and also kept a set of three white nesting tables, which also worked well in the new space.

My vision for the nursery was to create a room that was serene and peaceful and that our babies could grow into.  The sex of our babies was never relevant, since I knew I could always add pink or blue to any design I came up with.  Ultimately, we settled on a soft sage green for the main color of the room, with a soft ivory to complement it, to be used on the lower half.  The room would be divided by a soft white chair rail going around the entire room.  We decided to buy the cribs in a dark finish and balance the dark cribs with white accent furniture to avoid a look that was too heavy for a nursery.  We also had to move a large bookcase (from our office) into the nursery, since the futon would not fit into the office unless we did.  The bookcase complemented the dark finish on the cribs.

Here are more photos, along with the breakdown of what it took to create our lovely nursery.  I apologize for not posting prices, but it was a long process and I am afraid I did not keep very good track of all our expenses.

Time to finish the nursery…

As the weeks go by, with our babies in the NICU, we have been working hard at home to finish preparing everything for their arrival.
I have had to order a few more clothes to fit them, since they will most likely still be smaller than ‘newborn’ size when they come home.  I found out that BabyGap stocks some items in a size ‘Up to 7 lbs’ which will probably fit them better since they will probably be around 5 or 6 lbs, at the most when they come home.  We also had to buy another shelving unit for our garage, to accomodate the overflow of items that will probably not fit in the nursery.  We anticipate using it mostly for diapers and wipies, and also for their travel gear so we can save some space in their closet and in our home.
The nursery is essentially ready, with the exception of a few finishing touches. We have to hang their personalized picture frames, that will display their first tiny handprints and footprints along with their picture.  We are going to hang these over their cribs—to help everyone tell them apart!  I also plan to make a crystal pendant ‘chandelier’ to hang from the ceiling, but am still looking for some of the materials I need.  It will be similar to the popular capiz pendant lamps, but with crystals instead of capiz shells.  I am having a hard time finding the metal ring I need to string the crystals onto.  We are also looking to put up some pretty floral wall decals to soften the space—see the ones I’m considering below (available at WhatIsBlik.com).

Making Room for Babies

The babies aren’t going to be here for several more months, and yet we have had to do so much already to make room for those sweet little angels. First things first, they need their own room. Since I had recently redecorated our home office, and we rarely use the guest room, we decided to convert the guest room into a nursery. Easier said than done.

We had to move the futon into the home office (where it barely fits); move my crafts/drafting table and drawers into our bedroom; get rid of a large entertainment stand with a TV, DVD player, game console and games (and ended up taking it to Victor’s mom’s house, for a playroom we plan to have there); and still have a full-size ‘junk closet’ to clear out. Oh, yeah, and to make room in the home office for the futon, we had to move a large bookshelf out (which we hope to find use for in the nursery).

Once the old guest room was cleared out, we were ready to start on creating a peaceful nursery for two. We chose a light sage green as the main color, complemented by a subtle creamy ivory. The colors are divided by a white chair rail running across all walls, about half-way up in height. We are re-purposing one of our bedroom dressers for the babies’ room, since it’s huge and already white. We bought new glass knobs to make it more appropriate, and will also use it as the changing table for the babies. The windows are covered in silk green striped drapes, which we hope to keep for a while since they don’t scream ‘baby room’. We don’t yet have the cribs, but we plan to get them soon, and they will balance the room a bit since their finish is a dark espresso color. The plan is to have some white and some dark furniture in the room, so that it’s not all too ‘matchy’. The only disappointment we’ve faced so far is that the room barely looks big enough to accommodate one of those large cushy rocking chairs anymore. We are hoping we can still sneak one in after the cribs are in, depending on how we arrange the furniture; otherwise, we’ll have to get more creative in our seating options.

In addition, we decided to replace most of our wall-to-wall carpeting with laminate flooring to reduce the allergens in our home, for both our benefit and the babies’. That project alone required us to move all the furniture around and dust and re-dust everything during and after the renovation. We ended up installing the new flooring in our great room and hallways, and have left carpeting in the bedrooms and home office. We are so happy we made the change, though. It looks great and we have gotten rid of so much dust already, which was our goal.

Photos will follow shortly.

Sneak Peek: My New Office

Here is my new office! I wanted to give everyone a sneak peek, for now. The only thing left to do before I’m ‘finished’ is install the ceiling lighting I’ve purchased. Stay tuned for details of this project, including a breakdown of all the costs associated with the new room!

This was my office, before the makeover. So, what do you think? Feel free to share your comments. Thanks!
