natural vs. organic…what’s best for our little ones?

Lately, I’ve become consumed with all the debate and news surrounding the quality of products we use at home, on ourselves and our children, even around the house.  I’ve become intrigued with all the scandalous articles and accusations, including claims that even our good old Johnson & Johnson products are tainted with toxic ingredients!

As a parent, my number one priority is my children — their safety, to be even more specific.  I take extreme measures to make sure their surroundings are safe, by adapting our environment to their needs.  I’m careful to make sure their play area is safe, their food is organic and hormone-free, their bedroom is free of dangerous objects, our home is the right temperature, and that all chemicals and cleaning products are out of their reach.  But now, one more thing I have to watch out for??  The ingredients in their lotions may be dangerous?  The tear-free shampoo may cause cancer?  Well, I take it all with a grain of salt.  I have done my share of reading, and do agree that many ingredients in the products we use should be banned, or at minimum controlled.  It’s unnerving to know that the FDA bears no role in reviewing and, much less – approving, the products we used on our most precious little ones.

Then to add one more level of complexity to the issue, I learned one more fact recently.  Did you know that products that are labelled ‘natural’ are not the same as ‘organic’ ones?  I can’t get into the details of the differences now, but suffice it to say that to be called natural, the requirements are far less stringent than those for organic products.  Natural products include those that may have one or two natural items in them (i.e. natural oils, essence, etc), whereby organic products usually ONLY have natural products*.  So, a ‘natural’ item may still have some of those nasty ingredients we’re trying to stay away from.

I don’t want to write much more, as I’m still learning a lot on the topic, and can’t say I know a lot of the details yet.  I just wanted to post this to see if I generated some discussions from other parents, and learned more about what’s best for our little ones.  We already use mostly ‘green’ household products at home, and have decided to slowly make the transition over to the personal products we use for us and our children.  We have a lot of ‘research’ to do, and hopefully will learn a lot too.

These are some products we recently purchased, on a ‘trial’ basis, that are up for consideration.  Would love to hear about what you use, and especially about how you manage your budget with these pricier options.

Christmas 2011 {26 weeks}

These days, I’m grateful for the little joys in life.  It’s hard enough not to get through the day without being extremely fatigued and forgetful.  As I approach my due date for our next little one, I am excited and equally nervous.  This week has been a milestone week, as I am 29 weeks — the same I was when I delivered Eva & Zoe after being in the hospital for three weeks.  It is all new to me, from here on in.  My body is experiencing symptoms I had not gone through before, and I’m sure there are more to come.  Overall, though, I can’t complain.  I’m healthy, as is the little one growing inside me.  We are all excited to meet our newest addition soon.  Eva and Zoe love rubbing my belly, and cooing ‘baby baby’.  Victor has been so patient with me as I try to figure out the new nursery decor.  Our little family is full of love and we are ready for what lies ahead.

Here are a few of the things I’m most grateful for these days.

  • I’m thankful that I’m not retaining water and that my hands and feet are not swollen.  I’m happy I can still wear my pre-pregnancy shoes!
  • I’m thankful that I live in Florida and only have to deal with mild weather these days.  I was not so fortunate a few months ago, when travelling, and had to endure cold and rainy days.  I fell ill with bronchitis and was very close to catching pneumonia.
  • I’m happy that my severe morning sickness has subsided and I no longer have to take medication to keep my nausea away.  It’s been nice to eat my meals without worrying about being sick.
  • I’m thankful our sweet girls are on such a good routine.  It’s nice to know the evenings belong to just me and Victor.
  • I’m eternally grateful for Victor’s patience and dedication with the girls, and me, day in and day out.  He is my rock.  I couldn’t do any of this without him.
  • I’m thankful for my health and that of my unborn baby.  After everything we went through during my last pregnancy, it’s comforting to know that all’s well this time around, and I am no longer considered high-risk.
  • I’m thankful for decaf, because even though I’m not one of those people addicted to coffee, I do really enjoy the fancy coffee drinks Starbucks offers every now and then.  Caramel macchiato, anyone?

I hope to catch up on posting more about me and my sweet little family soon.  Been kind of busy these days, but in a good way.

ps. Is it a boy or a girl?  I don’t know and won’t until the baby arrives — due date April 7th.

Inspiration Peacock – Chic Home Office

I was asked to create a design board, based on a client’s existing picture of a peacock, which held special sentimental value for her.  I loved the idea of pulling a look together with such vibrant colors.  I was also thrilled when my client said she did not want boring beige walls in the area.

The request was for a space to be used primarily as a home office, with additional seating area.  I provided my client with two color options – aqua and white or teal and chocolate; she chose the rich teal palette featuring jewel tone colors.  We found several basic furniture items in dark brown, to ground the room, and added two comfy armchairs in a soft beige to balance out the room.  Colorful accents and accessories in teal and white brought some life to the room, along with a fun capiz chandelier and aqua ombre area rug for the space.

The total for all items came to about $3,000 which was a bit over the client’s $2,500 budget, but could be adjusted easily by carefully selecting other accessories in person while shopping.

What do you think of this board?  Does it tickle your feathers?  Are you interested in your own design board?  My rates start at $100 for virtual design services.  Contact me for additional details.

Tiffany Blue Wedding Inspiration

I’m very excited to be part of a very special day coming up, for my older sister.  She recently became engaged, this past Thanksgiving, and is in the midst of planning a wedding for the summer of 2012.  I volunteered to take on the task of planning her wedding, and helping her stay on budget, so she can focus on the joy of being engaged and making all the fun decisions while I can help her keep everything under control.  She wants to keep everything simple, and wants her color theme to be ‘ocean and sand’.  I’ve been working on collecting ideas and inspiration for her wedding on Pinterest.  I have a vision of a fun wedding with aqua and yellow sprinkled throughout, keeping the day very happy and joyous for all.
